Chapter 11

“Lord Lucix,” Elder Lucyl insisted. “You may be our revered leader and guide in all matters concerning our people, but decisions involving the well-being of our nation and its future can be endorsed only through our Council of Elders. The overwhelming majority of those Elders has given you its decision. They believe it is no longer our problem. Our defences in Linden are secure. We do not need the interference of outsiders who do not respect our lands and who ignore our sacred laws. We feel that their presence and influence have already caused significant damage to our way of life and our ancient customs. We have voted beyond all doubt not to allow them access to our realm ever again.”

“That’s garbage and you know it,” Lucix, Lord of All Luciens, interrupted, angry at this upstart’s temerity.

“With respect,” Lucyl went on unabashed, “your destruction of our hallowed language and the reverence with which it is held, are prime examples of the noxious influence laid on its use.”

“One of the many things ‘outsiders’ have taught me in the time I have spent with them is that our language in Linden is dying. It needs to embrace change in the same way our nation needs to embrace change, to survive in a rapidly evolving world. If they don’t, then they will both become extinct,” Lucix replied in his usual pragmatic and measured way. “Do I need to remind you also that the only way to realise our dream of seeing Linden reunited with Nordica is with the help of the solids? You seem to forget that it was a solid, Jimmy Scoggins, who rescued me, your Chieftain, from lifetime incarceration in the Watch Tower, when you, with all your gathered wisdom and trust in Linden’s protective power, had failed miserable.”

His close contact with Jimmy Scoggins for such a long time had shown him that his nation had stagnated just as much as those of Soobress and Qu’elbro. Although different in function, the same fate would befall them all if they didn’t interact and grow. Extinction is a mightily lengthy time! If a youngster like Jimmy could see it clearly, why couldn’t they, first-born of the oldest?

“So what happens when Umbrano invades our lands?” Lucix asked. “And surely he will.”

“Linden will protect us,” Lucyl answered naively.

“And when he slashes and tears down and burns our trees?” Lucix added, his light burning ever more brightly as his anger grew. “He has more minions he is prepared to lose than we have trees. There will come a time when Linden exists no more. Or are you so blinkered you can’t see the obvious?”

Lucyl took a step backwards, alarm at what he had witnessed in his lord and master. Turning about, he retreated with as much dignity as his office, and age, would demand, leaving Lucix to fume at the Elder’s intransigence and stupidity at not being able to accept the obvious and inevitable result of his inertia.

“We will support you whatever they decide in their arrogance and ignorance,” Lucyn promised.
